Emergency Plan

|
Role of Internal Drainage Boards (IDBs)
|
IDBs are responsible for providing a flood protection and water-level management service within the statutory
drainage districts, these being established in the lowland parts of the country, much below sea level where
there is particular need.
The emergency response of the IDBs depends upon the nature of the district, whether it includes pumped drainage
systems and to what extent the drainage is protected by infrastructure which is the responsibility of the
Environment Agency. Its role is to:
- liaise with the Environment Agency over developing flood conditions;
- ensure continuous and effective operation of land drainage pumping stations;
- during flood flow periods check the sensitive locations in the system and remove any restrictions;
- take necessary actions to reduce risk of flooding to property and land;
- liaise with the Agency on the situation, advising of any problems which may develop on its main river system;
- advise the District Council of the likelihood of any property flooding;
- advise where necessary any landowning interest of the likelihood of flooding;
- assist where possible in any post-flood remedial and clearance works.
