An amalgamation of five IDB's and constituted in 1974 the Board's area extends
to approximately 38,400 hectares of lands situated between the River Welland and
Nene immediately behind the coastal defences of "The Wash". The Board is
responsible for some 704 km of watercourse along the various associated
structures. Soils within the district range from silts in the north and heavy
clays in the south.
The Board has sixteen pumping stations, whose combined capacity is 35 cumecs
serving a total area of 25,277 hectares, including 625 hectares which are double
pumped. The thirty three pumps are all electrically driven and, except for
Westmere Pumping Station, are monitored by Telemetry.
